Time is a runaway child, gay,
unconcerned, frivolous,
impersonal.
Hold on to it, ta
me it,

make it work for you.

A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS

SAN JUAN:  IT'S tricky. On the one hand you don't want to fall
prey to the rampant consumerism associated with Christmas but
on the other hand you want to express your love and gratitude to
friends through a small gift, a token of affection that says you
appreciate them and took the time to think of them.

Yet even if the gift is small, it should be special. We went looking
for small treasures that anyone would be tickled pink (or red, this
being Christmas) to receive and found a potpourri of delightful
choices. Any of them would make a unique surprise to tuck under
the Christmas tree.

TALK about simplicity.
This cuff is the creation of
clever and talented artist
Maritza Perez, who recycles
old vinyl records into
attractive accessories,
like jewelry and handbags.
This particular cuff is elegant
yet uncomplicated. A definite
attention getter.

$16, at Pure Soul,
258 Calle San Justo

TILES printed with the names of Old San Juan's iconic streets
like Calle Sol and Calle Luna, how perfect is that! The black
lettering against the white of the tile makes a strong graphic
statement on these replicas of actual street signs but these signs
also are a reminder that cities are made up of people, including
the friends we love.

$12 small tiles; $16 medium at
The Poet's Passage,
203 Calle Cruz, Old San Juan

THESE colorful clothespins make a very dandy gift
that can be used not only to hold clothes in place as
they dry al fresco but also neatly double as clips
to use in holding together papers, important bills or
whatever needs to be kept in place so it can easily
be retrieved.

$1.49 each at
Always 99,
2448 Loiza Street.

CHRISTMAS is a time for food and merry but also
reflection and reminiscences of the past and
the people in our lives.

In "Bakers' Dozen, New and Selected Poems," poet
Maritza Rivera offers some lovely thoughts inspired by
the topic of food.

Here is her briefest poem in the book:

      "Dessert."

Flames licking a log
Like a child eating ice cream
hot and cold delights.

Rivera writes candidly and with feeling.
This is a gift that will delight each time
it is opened.

$5, at The Poet's Passage

 A SIMPLE TIP

   Quick action after red wine
spills over a tablecloth can prevent a nasty stain. Just boil water
in a tea kettle, stretch the tablecloth over a large bowl and pour
the hot water over the fabric.

In the heart is a place filled with joy.
This joy doesn't depend on anything.
