Earth Day 2015

Photography by Denise Blasor

"It's terrifying: Big business may be the perpetrator of much of
the world's pollution, but it could also be the solution."

Writer Katie Herzog explains "Why Earth Day doesn't matter
anymore" in a recent column in Grist.org. Well worth reading
today, the 45th anniversary of Earth Day, which kicked off in
1970 with the aim of focusing world attention on our troubled
environment.

The aim of life is to live,
and to live means to be aware,
joyously,
drunkenly,
serenely,
divinely aware.

GIFTS FROM THE EARTH

Kale, dill, parsley, zucchini, eggplant, ochra & eggs

San Juan -- On a glorious Sunday morning, the
hottest place in town was La Placita Roosevelt
where by 9:20 am the organic market was in full
swing under a bright sunny sky.

Farmers young and old displayed their colorful
bounty and only a limited budget kept one from
picking up something delectable at every stand.

The choice was ample and the produce on sale
couldn't have looked better with healthy, firm
skins and brilliant colors. The bounty of the
earth included kale, arugula,zucchini, eggplant,
tomatoes, dill, parsley, lettuce, sweet aji
peppers, ochra. A far cry from the stale-looking
produce one finds all too often at the local
supermarkets.

By 9:30 am the market at Placita Roosevelt is in full swing

Interspersed among the stands were kiosks selling
packaged organic foods, artisanal breads, and
plants: from medicinal and herb plants to
regular fruit and produce plants. One of the more
popular stands, as attested by the long line
of people waiting to be served, sold free-range
farm eggs. They looked beautiful, their shells in
a rainbow of white shades from delicate ivory to
peach puff.

The good vibes at the market were just what one
needed to kick off a relaxing Sunday that would
end with a tasty little meal featuring all the
goodies collected in the morning.

La Placita, a charming, old fashioned plaza
in a quiet neighborhood off Hato Rey's
banking district, welcomes the organic market on
the first and third Sunday of every month.

AFTERNOON TEA at PURE SOUL

AMONG the simple pleasures in life, few are as satisfying
or as relaxing as a cup of tea. This brew,  which has been
around for millennia  (the earliest tea drinkers lived in China
in the 10th century BC), is soothing yet also manages
to provide a much needed energy boost, especially when
consumed in the late afternoon.

If you are looking for new teas to try, head to Pure Soul Living
on May 2 when this lovely store devoted to home decor introduces
a new product line, Santiago Fine Teas, developed by local tea
specialist Sandra Santiago.

The tea tasting will be held between 2 and 4 p.m..
