COWABUNGA!

By Lorraine Blasor
ENTER OCTOBER and it brings us so much closer to the end of 2011. And what a heady year it has been so far: Japan's nightmare tsunami and earthquake; the troubled economy of the U.S. and Europe; the killing of Osama Bin Laden; the still ongoing Arab Spring, especially the people of Egypt's success in ending the 30-year rule of Hosni Mubarak.
AT THIS POINT in the calendar, possibly lagging spirits might be in need of some wisdom and encouragement. Herewith, some words from the wise.

"As long as you're breathing, it's not too late to try something new. Don't save your bucket list for later. Start crossing off your lifetime to-do's now."  Barbara E. Joe, 73, joined Peace Corps after 40 years of wishing to do so.

"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm." Winston Churchill, British politician and statesman.

"Always let them think of you as singing and dancing." Anita Brookner, writer.

"The best antidote I have found is to yearn for something. As long as you yearn, you can't congeal: There is a forward motion to yearning." Gail Godwin, writer.

"To be what we are, and to become what we are capable of becoming, is the only end of life." Robert Louis Stevenson, writer.

☛Editor's Note: Last week's blog included an item about "Take What Is Yours," a play by Erica Fae to be shown in New York this month. It also incorrectly mentioned that women in Egypt cannot drive. It is women in Saudi Arabia who are prohibited from driving. Apologies for the mix-up.
As for the meaning of that delightful word "Cowabunga": "The word was the cry of Chief Thunderthud, a character in the children's television program Howdy Doody. The word was later adopted by surfers. It was popularized by its use on the animated show Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Earliest documented use: 1954." From wordsmith.org☚
